Three project descriptions with accompanying samples are below. Additional samples are available.

Client:

Ryan Snyder Associates

Project Type:

Editing/Consulting

Field:

Urban Planning

Ryan Snyder Associates received funding to help cities revitalize their neighborhoods through a new kind of street design manual. The manual, written by fifty noted experts from across the United States, offers cities a comprehensive set of tools to create streets that are safe and inviting for everyone, especially pedestrians and bicyclists.

Jessica was significantly involved throughout the manual’s creation. Before writing began, Jessica discussed strategies with the client to manage the writing process. Jessica created and gave a presentation for the experts when they met to write a first draft. She described challenges the experts, who wrote in teams, would face and offered solutions.

Jessica edited several drafts of the document to take it to polished final version. She identified problem areas, requested clarifications, made structural changes, and crafted precise and grammatically correct language. She made style and formatting decisions and ensured that the manual (available here) was consistent throughout.

Client:

Sharp Electronics Solar Energy Solutions Group

Project Type:

Editing/Document Management

Field:

Renewable Energy

The client, a division of one of the world’s largest solar photovoltaic manufacturers, faced tight deadlines for responses to requests for proposals (RFPs) for major utility-scale solar energy projects. Jessica became the content manager for the responses, collecting information from a number of contributors within Sharp and producing the documents. She ensured the documents met the RFPs’ requirements and that information was communicated effectively and professionally. In both cases, Sharp advanced to the next stage.

Client:

The City Project

Project Type:

Writing

Field:

Public Policy/Public Health

The City Project advocates for open space in communities with few parks. These communities often have high rates of obesity and related diseases because people have nowhere to exercise. The City Project’s director wanted to highlight the nonprofit’s work at an international conference and asked Jessica to help.

The conference's focus was disease prevention and early detection. Jessica studied the organizers' requirements for submissions. She determined three of the nonprofit’s projects were likely to interest the organizers: (1) a pilot project to help children experience the outdoors, (2) City Project’s victory in getting the Los Angeles Unified School District to enforce a state physical education law, and (3) the nonprofit’s role in helping pass and implement a state law to put parks in low income and park-poor neighborhoods. Jessica wrote and submitted three abstracts describing the projects. All three were accepted and published.
